How Perrigo moved its core SAP ERP system from a local data centre to Microsoft Azure, with minimal impact on day-to-day operations.
The challenge
The SAP ERP system is the heart of Perrigo’s European operations. It ran in a local data centre and had to move to the Azure cloud.
The operations and warehouses in 15 countries across Europe and Australia use it every day. Migrating such a critical system calls for tight planning, to keep downtime as short as possible.
My approach
I led the migration and coordinated the many stakeholders in Europe and Australia, in collaboration with and supported by teams in the US. This kept all parties aligned, from IT to the people on the warehouse floor.
The result
A successful migration to Azure, with smooth integration and minimal disruption to operations.
The switchover took place in a single weekend. On Friday the systems and warehouses went down, and on Monday logistics started up again, following the time zones: Australia first, then Europe. All warehouses were able to run normally that Monday, with a minimum of extra work.
